Alex McKie
Description:
Alex is a globetrotting scientist who specialises in how to bring water and sanitation to the poorest communities in the world to prevent environmental diseases. Alex spent her formative years living in Iran, Africa and Outer Mongolia, where she had many exotic pets including a chimpanzee, two owls, a couple of giant land tortoises and also a bat. She has climbed the tallest tree in the Benin rainforest, hunted for dinosaur skeletons in the Gobi desert and escaped a civil war in Iran (in a pram pushed by her mother). She has worked as an environmental science assistant in Outer Mongolia, played with mechanical engineering with a brief sting at Williams F1, civil engineering building roads in Chigago and has now returned to her first love, the environment. She completed her PhD in Environmental Heath in 2008. She is the founder of Millenium Water, an environmental consultancy company which works with a broad range of clients from technology companies to charities.
Alex first appeared on TV in the Truth About Food series for BBC2, where she allowed herself to be used as a scientific Guinea Pig to see if detox diets really work. She has also been a contender on Scrapheap Challenge for Channel 4, judged a school’s engineering competition for Teacher’s TV and been a regular guest on BBC radio to discuss the environment, from Hurricane Katrina to drought in South-east England. While she was completing her PhD she also worked as motorcycle test-rider and journalist for RPM magazine. Alex is exciting new science and engineering talent with unending enthusiasm to communicate her passions and knowledge to the masses.
